Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life by Wendy Mass

"In one month Jeremy Fink will turn thirteen. But does he have what it takes to be a teenager? He collects mutant candy, he won't venture more than four blocks from his apartment if he can help it, and he definitely doesn't like surprises. On the other hand, his best friend, Lizzy, isn't afraid of anything, even if that might get her into trouble now and then. Jeremy's summer takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious wooden box arrives in the mail. According to the writing on the box, it holds the meaning of life! Jeremy is supposed to open it on his thriteenth birthday. The problem is, the keys are missing, and the box is made so that only the keys will open it without destroying what's inside. Jeremy and Lizzy set off to find the keys, but when one of their efforts goes very wrong, Jeremy starts to lose hope that he'll ever be able to open the box. But he soon discovers that when you're meeting people named Oswald Oswald and using a private limo to deliver unusual objects to strangers all over the city, there might be other ways of finding out the meaning of life."

I really looked forward to reading this book. So when I finally picked it up and it had a SLOW beginning, I was pretty disappointed. With most books, I would have simply put it down after a slow start, but I had really looked forward to reading Jeremy Fink, so I decided to stick with it and keep reading. I'm SOOOOO glad that I did! Once you reach the middle of the book and meet Mr. Oswald, everything become much more interesting and the speed really picks up. By the time I finished this book, I was seriously bummed out that it was over. I felt like I had to say good-bye to an old friend. This book can teach an important life lesson to a 5th grader or an adult - it doesn't matter. It's wonderful for EVERYONE!!!!

I know what you mean about the slow start. If you and Mrs. McLendon hadn't encouraged me that it was worth it to keep reading then I would have set it down and forgotten about it. Thank goodness I stuck with it! The missions Jeremy and Lizzy go on are so secret that they don't even know what they are supposed to do. I had so much fun going along with them on their adventures! I was in shock with what is actually in the box. I really look forward to reading more by this author. She has a great voice and I can't wait to meet her next characters.
