Shark Girl by Kelly Bingham

"On a sunny day in June, at the beach with her mom and brother, fifteen-year-old Jane Arrowood went for a swim. And then everything - absolutely everything - changed. Now she's counting down the days until she returns to school with her fake arm, where she knows kids will whisper, "That's her - that's Shark Girl," as she passes. In the meantime there are only questions: Why did this happen? Why her? What about her art? What about her life? In this striking first novel, Kelly Bingham uses peoms, letters, telephone conversations, and newspaper clippings to look unflinchingly at what it's like to lose part of yourself - and to summon the courage it takes to find yourself again."

What a difference a day makes! Especially for fifteen-year-old Jane. 8-2 and I are currently finishing up this book, and I really enjoyed it! In the blink of an eye, Jane, the main character, goes from a normal teenage girl, to a "freak." This story is about Jane's courage to accept life again after a traumatic experience that could send her spiraling into depression. I would recommend this book to the 8th grade class, especially the girls. It may be a little mature for younger grades. This book reminds us to keep fighting through life's hard times and to love who we are, no matter what.

I really enjoyed reading Shark Girl. I believe that she learned many important lessons throughout the book. I also learned that you should never take anything for granted. It always seems that we all do. Then, something horrible happens- like losing a limb. I'd rather lose a limb than die, but it still would depress me...until I realised that it's not so bad. I give this book a 10 of 10 !!!

I have currently finished the book "Shark Girl" as a class. I was inspired by Jane, the main character. I was inspired by Jane because she got her arm amputated and never gave up on drawing. She also made me learn that you should never give up on what you love doing.

Shark Girl is about a girl named Jane that got bit by a shark while at the beach in her right arm.She had to get her arm amputated and go to therapy. She hated it when people stared at her or told her she was fine. But what she liked about being in the hospital was visiting with her friend Johnathan, (age 10) because he didn't care about her arm and she didn't care about his leg.
